Photo Tour 2018

On March 10, 2018, the Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia hosted its fourth annual Photo Tour, titled, “Photo Tour 2018, A Musical Odyssey – The Heritage of Greek Music in Philadelphia.” The event was held at the Philadelphia History Museum and the two and half hour program had certainly made a huge impression on the more than 300 attendees and guests.

The multimedia exhibit, spanning 100 years, featured Greek musicians and bands from the area. It traced the roots of Greek music back to the beginning when Greek immigrants first arrived in the city creating Greektown. Over thirty bands and musicians were featured, along with a display of family-owned heirloomed instruments. A short film captured the history of Greek music in the area and featured the local bars and clubs in Greektown, and the link to the early recordings of rebetika music at RCA/Victor records in Camden, NJ.

The general public photo submissions and a map showing the many places where Greek music was performed, rounded out the exhibit.

Although the event is now closed to the public, the GAHSP encourages those interested in this, or any previous “Photo Tours,” to continue to submit their photographs and other materials to the digital library that GAHSP continues to build. Your photographs will contribute to build and define our community while showing how the Greeks of Philadelphia and the Greater Delaware Valley, have contributed to the making of America.
