GAHSP announces 6th Annual Photo Tour: “Greek Diners and Restaurants – The Start of the American Dream”

Greek Diners and Restaurants

Mention the word diner, and most people immediately think of Greeks. What was it that turned simple folk that arrived in America from the villages, towns, and cities of Greece into some of the most successful diner owners in the country, not to mention some of the best cooks?

From the earliest years of the 20th Century to the present, Greeks have been associated with the diner/restaurant business, which not only is the central spot for the American community but the foundation of the Greek-American communities they are in. They are places where people meet their neighbors and have a good meal. For many customers, the Greek-owned diner/restaurant is a place where they remember going as a child and now bring their grandchildren. It is a unique institution, not only throughout the United States but in the Delaware Valley where the diner is the part of the epicenter of the diner/restaurant business of the greater New York and New Jersey area where it all began.

The Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia is proud to honor and present the history of Greek-owned diners/restaurants. The families that operated them, the famous diner/restaurant names, the food, the atmosphere, their importance to the community in general, and the photographs that captured it all for more than a century.

Submissions

Submission of photographs that may be exhibited at the Photo Tour may be submitted through phototour@gahsp.org. Please contact us also if you own artifacts and other diner & restaurant memorabilia.

  1. How to scan your photos
    We need high-resolution scans. Use 300 dpi. TIFFs or JPEGs are the best.
    Please, no GIF images and no PDFs. Cell phone photos are fine. Please send us the biggest file your email allows.
  2. How to name your photos
    Please put your name on the file and a number if you are sending more than one.
  3. Tell us about each photo
    Please give us the following information (download the submission form or fill out a sheet, scan it or photograph it and send it along with the picture).- Title (Name of person, group, or activity)
    – Names or importance of people in the photo
    – Reason for submission
    – Date of the picture (to the best of your knowledge)
    – Location of photo
    – Submitted by (your name and phone number)
    – Has the photo ever been published? If so, where?
    – Do you have the rights to this photo?
    – Do you give GAHSP the rights to publish your photo and to put it in our archives?

    Please email your photos as an attachment.
    If your file is larger than 10 MB or your email program can’t send it, use WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive, or any service allows you to include a link to your files in your email.

By submitting your photo, you warrant you are the owner of the photo, you waive all rights to compensation, and you hereby grant GAHSP permission to use, display, or publish the submitted photo in any and all of GAHSP’s publications, promotions, and campaigns, including public and private exhibits, magazines, websites, Facebook or any other similar social network, or broadcast, and any other print or other media outlet, and to publish or distribute this photo for purposes of publicizing the GAHSP’s programs, exhibits, or for any other lawful purpose, without payment or any other consideration.
