Archives Moved to Temporary Storage
March 21, 2012 in General
The archives were recently moved from the barn at Founder Mary Creticos’ Farm in Quakertown into temporary storage. The move has set the stage for the start of the archive project. These unique historic records and artifacts that document the early history of the Greek American community of the greater Philadelphia region will need to be professionally assessed, cataloged, and preserved. The Society plans to scan and make electronic copies of the materials available on its website in the future.
Early records of the Greek American community include material from the first Greek Orthodox Church in the Philadelphia region, “Evangelismos”, which was located at 745 S. 12th street in Philadelphia . The archive also includes materials from the collections of local Greek amateur historians.
The Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia hopes to work with other Hellenic community groups and societies to develop a digital archive that will document the history of the Greek American community in Philadelphia.
